How to get started in gym and reach your fitness goals

How often should you go?

As a beginner in the gym it is recommended that you ease yourself into your new routine. To do this you can start by going 3 days a week and then gradually increase the amount of times you are going per week. If you are looking to do some strength training you could start by doing 3 full body sessions per week to get your body used to resistance training.

The difference between cardio and resistance training

Cardio is short for Cardiovascular exercise. Cardio is a type of training that raises your heart rate and keeps it up for a prolonged period of time. Cardio is good for strengthening your heart and blood vessels. Cardio also helps with the oxygen flow around the body and improves an individuals overall fitness.

Resistance training or Strength training is a type of training where you lift against the resistance. This could be using dumbbells, a barbell, machines, bodyweight, bands or kettlebells. The aim of resistance training is to improve muscular strength, endurance and size.

Does weightlifting burn calories?

It is a common misconception that you should just do cardio if you want to burn calories in the gym. Lifting weights also burns calories however the amount of calories burnt depends on the intensity of the workout.
