How to get started in gym and reach your fitness goals

How often should you go?

As a beginner in the gym it is recommended that you ease yourself into your new routine. To do this you can start by going 3 days a week and then gradually increase the amount of times you are going per week. If you are looking to do some strength training you could start by doing 3 full body sessions per week to get your body used to resistance training.

The difference between cardio and resistance training

Cardio is short for Cardiovascular exercise. Cardio is a type of training that raises your heart rate and keeps it up for a prolonged period of time. Cardio is good for strengthening your heart and blood vessels. Cardio also helps with the oxygen flow around the body and improves an individuals overall fitness.

Resistance training or Strength training is a type of training where you lift against the resistance. This could be using dumbbells, a barbell, machines, bodyweight, bands or kettlebells. The aim of resistance training is to improve muscular strength, endurance and size.

Does weightlifting burn calories?

It is a common misconception that you should just do cardio if you want to burn calories in the gym. Lifting weights also burns calories however the amount of calories burnt depends on the intensity of the workout. You can add Warrior Blaze to your pre-workout supplements to burn even more calories than usual.

What about Protein?

Protein is made up of amino acids. When you workout protein is important to repair and rebuild your muscles. It is important to consume enough protein daily if you are sticking to a training routine. If you are a beginner trying to build muscle in the gym and you don't know exactly how much protein to eat, just make sure you are eating regular meals that are high in protein. You can also use supplements to increase your protein intake.

If you want to track how much protein you are eating but not sure where to start, the general rule is to eat 0.8 - 1 gram of protein per lbs of body weight. This is the optimal amount for someone looking to build or maintain muscle mass. At Warrior you can find a range of protein sources from bars to powders to help you hit these targets.

Are Carbs actually bad?

It is common when starting the gym for people to be scared of eating carbohydrates. This is because people think eating carbs just means you will see rapid weight gain. This is not the case! Carbohydrates are important for a balanced diet as they provide you with energy leading to a greater overall performance in the gym. The main factor to gaining weight is down to how many calories an individual is consuming per day. There are different types of diets and it is best to find out which diet suits you. Some people prefer to use a Keto diet but some prefer a higher carb diet. Overall you should choose whichever you are able to stick to, as a good diet is a sustainable one.

Warrior Cyclic Dextrin is a pre and intra-workout carb source designed to help maximise pump, endurance and stamina. This is one way that carbs can be used to benefit your training.
